１．英国領になった香港島
章題の”Under the British Flag”は、1842年にアヘン戦争が集結し、南京条約により香港が英国領になったことを言っている。
２．香港島高台に新校舎建設移転
その恩恵で、マカオにあったギュツラフ夫人の私塾を引き継いだモリソン記念学校は、香港政庁から香港島の高台に新校舎用地を提供され、デント商会の資金援助で1873年に新校舎が建設され移転した。なお、同年にはギュツラフが政庁のChinese Secretaryという高級官僚に登用されていた。
３・ギュツラフ邸での出会い
マカオのギュツラフ邸にはブラウン着任の4年前から英国政府から日本送還を託された音吉等3人の日本人漂流者がいて、聖書の日本訳を手伝っていた。音吉は後にデント商会の職員としても活躍した
また、着任の1年後には英国で孤児になった１３歳のHarry Parkesが従姉のギュツラフ夫人を頼ってマカオに移住して来た。Parkes は１５歳にして貿易監督官ヘンリー・ポッチンジャーの通訳の一人として南京条約調印式に出席するほどの早熟で、後日駐日英国公使に就任したのはご存知の通り。ブラウンはこの異才パークスとも交流していた。
